Is Your Cars Paint Protected When Going Through A Car Wash?

Hi, this is Ben Smith with BLS Auto Detail in Santa Rosa, CA. Here is your tip for the day. Most people when they go to a car wash, assume the car wash is cleaning the car, which it is. The problem with a car wash is this; the harsh aggressive chemicals they use to clean your car quick and fast, strip off most of your protection on your car, the wax. When you pay for the upgraded wax, I guess sealer they call them or something on it. They have different names sealer wax on the menu, that’s… What that do is shine the car, but it’s not adding protection.

When your car comes out, it’s all shinny and nice. You think it’s protected, it’s really not, it’s just shinny. Then that’s gonna last about maybe three or four days. A good quality wax will last you three to four months, and there’s also exclusive lines on the market that could last up to two to three years. And those products will have to be buffed into your paint job. To maintain the look and feel of your paint, make sure you use a quality wax that not only makes your paint or your car look good, but will protect it as well.

How To Clean Car Windows

Hi, this is Benjamin Smith of BLS Auto Detailing and here is your tip for the day. When you clean [car] windows, all you need is what’s called microfiber towels, and you can get them at Walmart, Kmart, any of those places, and you need distilled water.

All of these window cleaners they sell 409 and all these spray stuff, these foams and all these different things, you don’t need those. All you need is distilled water, spray it on the window like so, and just wipe it off. Go on one direction on the outside so you know where the streaks are. See, I’m going in one direction. And on the inside [go other direction]. See, with the purified water, this will dry perfectly clear. ‘Cause there’s no minerals in the water and there’s nothing in the water to make it spot. So you’re not using city water on the inside. You will just go in the opposite direction ’cause that way you know where the streaks are. And then you just take another towel or turn this towel over and just dry it off. That way, you save money. You don’t have to buy window cleaner, all that stuff which is pretty much a waste of money. Now, if you look at the window… Pretty good.

Now, also on this tip, I’m gonna show you something. Coming out closer. This trim, this car has been to the car wash, probably the touchless car wash. And the detergents they use are very aggressive to get the car clean, since there’s no brushes touching or anything touching the car. Basically the soap has to basically melt the dirt off. In the process, you can stain the trim because the soaps are very aggressive and way too harsh for the paint. The paint usually can take it, but the plastic trim as you see here is stained and damaged, as well as the plastic trim here too. Because this is very porous and it’s just a gloss coating over it and that’s what happened. So, if you want to go to car washes at all costs, the best ones are the handwash and there you go.

Why Wax Your NEW Car or Truck?

Hi, this is Ben Smith with BLS Auto Detail and here is your Tip for the Day. This is a brand new GMC truck. You can see the license plate. It’s a Envoy or something like that.

Most people… A myth is they think that if there is wax on the car, the car is protected. If you don’t pay for some kind of protection package, chrome plating or what have you, there really is nothing on your car. Sometimes you can be able to hear the drag on these things, the resistance. This one, you can kind of feel it, you can’t see it.

So, what we’re gonna to do is throw a towel across just so you can see how it doesn’t really slide all the way across. It kind of stops there. Okay. So, we’re gonna wax this hood and show you the difference of the kind of slickness of the paint. So, we’ll wax this really quick. And then you can just see how the towel slides right across it. But when there is nothing on the paint like this, the consumer thinks “Oh, the car is protected,” but tree sap gets on here, bird crap gets on here or something like that, it can actually damage the paint because there is no protection between the paint and the elements. So, anything that gets on there will in fact damage the car.

This paint is a lot smoother and sleeker now. Okay, now we’re gonna throw… Do the towel test. Okay, watch this. Lot less resistance, the paint is protected. Good bye.

Should I Take My Car Through A Car Wash?

This is Ben Smith with BLS Auto Detail in Santa Rosa, CA. Today we’re going through a car wash here to show you why we shouldn’t be doing this. If you pan over to the brushes over here, you can see the brushes, they are nylon. The problem with those brushes is that they look clean but when they are spinning at a high rate of speed, which you’ll see in a second, any kind of dirt, dust or something that’s on there is going to scratch your car and put very fine scratches in it. Right now they are washing the car first before we go through the brushes. But those brushes are going to scratch it. And you’ll see it on dark-colored cars. They look like swirl marks.

Second point we need to make is the soap that they use is pretty aggressive. So, it can damage your trim, the plastic trim on your car sometimes. Third thing is they use recycled water, meaning that all the water is recycled over and over again. So, if their filters are not working correctly, dirt sediment can be stuck in the water or whatever, and then they are recycling it back on to your car. The third thing we want to discuss is when we’re out of this thing, they’re gonna use terry cloth towels to dry your car instead of microfiber towels. And those are abrasive and can also scratch your paint.

The last point I want to make, and now you can see these brushes are spinning now at a high rate of speed and that’s just basically just going to braid my paint. Now, what’s gonna happen is, when it’s all done, they are going to spray a wax on inside the machine that’s going to fill all the scratches in. So, it’s kind of like makeup. It’s going to fill all the scratches in so your car look great when it comes out. That’s why your car comes out shiny and nice. But over a day or so, all that wax wears off, and all the scratches that these brushes put in the car are gonna reappear.

This is why you don’t want to go to the car wash. Any of these brushes, one of these things flapping across the car, it’s okay on the windshield and the glass, but the paint, not so much. And now we’re gonna come to the end here. And they’re gonna dry it off with these towels. So, this is why you don’t want to use this kind of car washes. The best one to use is a strict hand wash and that’s it.

Thank you very much.

Caring For Your Cars Leather Seats

Hi, this is Ben Smith, BLS Auto Detail in Santa Rosa. Here is your Tip for the Day. This is a Bentley, and this leather here is very expensive. So, what we’re going to show you today is how to basically take care of your leather interior on your car.

What we have here, it’s called microfiber towel, and these are very, very soft. They don’t scratch or anything like that. And this here is just purified water. So, whenever you clean your interior, you always just wanna take the softest and the cleanest stuff possible. We’re gonna spray a little bit of water on this thing. As you can see, that’s just purified water.

You don’t wanna use any harsh chemicals, no Simple Green, nothing like that. Always use the softest and cleanest stuff you have. And distilled water is pure water. So, just wipe it down. Wipe off the dust and maintain that. Just do that once every… Once a week, once every few days, and it’ll keep the car interior nice. You can also put a leather conditioner on that after that. But this is just in-between maintenance kind of stuff.

Auto Detailing: Buffer Marks & Scratches

Hi, this is Ben Smith with BLS Auto Detail in Santa Rosa, and here is your Tip for the Day.

This is a 2011 Bentley. We want to show you some damages on here from bad detail work that you can see… Well, we’ll point it to the rims. We’ll sort of look closely. It really is a Bentley there. This is a $200,000 car. But if you look on the paint here, there is severe buffer marks from a person buffing this car, either a dealership or another detailer or somebody. But they look like holograms and they’re going up and down the side of the car. And that’s from a buffer. And that’s from somebody that was using the buffer incorrectly and that’s what happens.

And what that does is all these marks take away from the clarity of the paint. So, when these are all buffed out and all those swirls and all those buffer marks are gone, the paint has a lot deeper, richer look to it. So, it’s got that wet look to it. But with the buffer marks and a poor buffed job, it detracts from the shine. And like I said, this is a $200,000 car, which should not have these kind of marks on it. These could be removed. A good detail shop who would know what to do to get these out.

I am Ben Smith. This is your detail Tip for the Day. Thank you.

Caring For Your Leather Seats

Hi, this is Ben Smith of BLS Auto Detailing in Santa Rosa, California, and today we’re gonna talk about how to take care of your leather seats. Now, on your seats you get wear marks and cracks and a lot of that is from not proper care. What happens is dirt is what causes most of the wear on your seats because dirt, if you take it down to a microscopic level, it’s actually jagged-edged pieces and sand. So you think about how… That abrades against your seats and that’s what puts the wear marks on your seats. So, it’s very important to vacuum and clean your car on a regular basis to avoid these wear marks.

Also, when you’re sitting in your seat, try not to go like this and rub against the seat ’cause any kind of a rubbing, friction motion, it is also going to wear that seat. Try to just sit down as easily as you can, without wearing against your seats and causing friction. All of that creates the wear of the seats and these are your tips to help protect your car. You wanna see if the car gets wet, if it rains or you wet your car and if the water beads up in fine little beads like this and rolls of the paint, that’s what you’re looking for. How To Tell If Your Car Isn’t Waxed

Hi. This is Ben Smith, of BLS Auto Detail and this is our quick tip for today.

If you look at this car here, the paint, the water on the paint here is not in tight beads and that’s usually an indication that the car needs wax. So, when the paint or when the water beads up in little tight beads means the paint is healthy and it’s probably waxed. When it’s not beading up as in the case on this car, then it’s most likely in need of wax. This is our quick tip for the day. This is Ben Smith of BLS Auto Detail. Thank you very much.
