Should I Take My Car Through A Car Wash?

This is Ben Smith with BLS Auto Detail in Santa Rosa, CA. Today we’re going through a car wash here to show you why we shouldn’t be doing this. If you pan over to the brushes over here, you can see the brushes, they are nylon. The problem with those brushes is that they look clean but when they are spinning at a high rate of speed, which you’ll see in a second, any kind of dirt, dust or something that’s on there is going to scratch your car and put very fine scratches in it. Right now they are washing the car first before we go through the brushes. But those brushes are going to scratch it. And you’ll see it on dark-colored cars. They look like swirl marks.

Second point we need to make is the soap that they use is pretty aggressive. So, it can damage your trim, the plastic trim on your car sometimes. Third thing is they use recycled water, meaning that all the water is recycled over and over again. So, if their filters are not working correctly, dirt sediment can be stuck in the water or whatever, and then they are recycling it back on to your car. The third thing we want to discuss is when we’re out of this thing, they’re gonna use terry cloth towels to dry your car instead of microfiber towels. And those are abrasive and can also scratch your paint.

The last point I want to make, and now you can see these brushes are spinning now at a high rate of speed and that’s just basically just going to braid my paint. Now, what’s gonna happen is, when it’s all done, they are going to spray a wax on inside the machine that’s going to fill all the scratches in. So, it’s kind of like makeup. It’s going to fill all the scratches in so your car look great when it comes out. That’s why your car comes out shiny and nice. But over a day or so, all that wax wears off, and all the scratches that these brushes put in the car are gonna reappear.

This is why you don’t want to go to the car wash. Any of these brushes, one of these things flapping across the car, it’s okay on the windshield and the glass, but the paint, not so much. And now we’re gonna come to the end here. And they’re gonna dry it off with these towels. So, this is why you don’t want to use this kind of car washes. The best one to use is a strict hand wash and that’s it.

Thank you very much.
